The Power of an Anonymous Gift

On a recent podcast with Amy Poehler, the comedian Carol Burnett shared an amazing story. She grew up 1 block off Hollywood Boulevard and was raised by her grandmother. They lived in an apartment that costs $1/day to rent in 1950’s LA. They didn’t have much money, and Carol slept on a couch every night.

She dreamed of going to UCLA, but her grandmother told her they could not afford the semester’s tuition of $43. One day, Carol checked the mail, and inside was an unsigned envelope addressed to her. The envelope contained a $50 bill, which would be the equivalent of $604 in today’s money. She still does not know to this day who gave her the money. But that one anonymous gift set in motion the journey of the person we know today as Carol Burnett.

Who’s your Carol Burnett? What can one envelope do for a young person who needs a scholarship?
