How Joy Makes Life Meaningful

In her book Joyspan: The Art and Science of Thriving in Life’s Second Half, Gerontologist and author Dr. Kerry Burnight describes seven ways to cultivate joy to improve your lifespan:

1.) Gratitude practice: Regularly reflect on things you are thankful for.

2.) Exercise: Physical activity and play improve your mood.

3.) Social connections: Strong friendships and family relationships build emotional resilience.

4.) Mindfulness and meditation: Spiritual practices connect you to God, reduce stress, and help you focus on the present.

5.) Kindness: Helping others generates joy and connection.

6.) Work and hobbies: Stay active in things that bring purpose and fulfillment.

7.) Laughter: Spend time with people and engage in activities that make you laugh.
