Last year, scientists announced a breakthrough in treating vision impairment. Normally, patients dealing with macular degeneration could see only a large black disc with some hazy light around it. Scientists have now discovered a way to restore some sight to people with late-stage macular degeneration. Surgeons implant a small microchip near the retina. With the implant and assisted glasses, they can see black-and-white images. One of the recipients, Sheila Irvine, said, “I was an avid bookworm, and I wanted that back. I was nervous, excited, all those things. It’s a new way of looking through your eyes, and it was really exciting when I began seeing a letter. It’s not simple, learning to read again, but the more hours I put in, the more I pick up.”[1]
