Do You Want to Fast from Technology for Lent?

Last December, students at St. John’s College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, organized a one-week fast from their phones and other devices. As one student noted, the goal was not to try to win the game by seeing who could survive without their device. The goal was to reflect why they needed to play the game at all.

They realized that phones were more than just communication devices; they also used them for alarms and class schedules. Some needed creative ways to find friends. Because the school texts urgent messages via phones, some students worried about how they would know if there was an emergency on campus.
